Creating
Art Quilts Using Inspirational Texts Inspiration
begins in many forms. In this
workshop, students start with an excerpt of the written word…a line,
parable, verse, poem or spiritual writing to create an original, narrative
statement art quilt. All
spiritual interests and backgrounds welcome in this class.
This
1-3 day workshop will include group discussion as well as individual
workshop creation time. Mini
lessons will be held throughout this workshop to give quilters tools to
jump-start art quilt creation in new ways.
Students will learn to layer meaning into their creations following
a spontaneous process-based method of design.
Mini lesson topics will include raw edge appliqué and couching,
fusing and impromptu piecing methods.
Additional lecture will offer suggestions for quilting and
embellishing class projects. Works
produced may be representational or abstract in nature. The
students should be willing to contemplate ideas found in writings as well
as stretch their creative quilting abilities.
Since much of the creation in this method focuses on thinking
through ideas found in written works, pre-work for the class includes
research on the chosen text excerpt. *Additional day allows for additional workshop time and more in-dept instruction on beading, quilting, studio work and finishing.
